You can be in your bed half asleep with no way for you to see what's outside and you hear a engine starting. You definitely know it's a Honda, Hondas always gave the same damn starter sound.
But that's not my favorite starter sound. My favorite would be the one on the 1UZFE engine...it just sounds...orgasmic.
What would be your favorite starter sound Oppo?

GM also has the same starter sound on many of their cars, They were very similar to the one in my mother's old Pontiac van, a 1999 Trans-Sport Montana. I think a big diesel starter gives the best noise, more power.

It's not a car, but the Oh-58's I flew in sounded so awesome on startup... The two stage whine as the starter gets the turbine up to speed was delightful, then you get the turbine drop in.

I can tell the starter sound of all the cars in the family. My 68 camaro has always had the most distinct sound in the fleet since all the other old cars have mini starters. It just has that old car sound when starting up.

Old Ford starters. Mod motor Ford starters. I can recognize them asleep from 10 miles away.

Not a good engine/car combo at all but I seem to have a northstar spidey sense, in that if somebody is starting one within a reasonable distance, I'll hear it and pick it out. Across parking lots, in dealerships............If you start up a northstar, I'll hear it.

I meant more about the actual starter sound than the engine, but this is great. Can't complain. Hahaha.

Thanks! I forgot to post the starter sound of the project ive been helping my grandpa with. First time the car was outside.

My favorite starter sound is no starter at all. Lemme splain.
One nice warm day I decided to drive the Sprite to work, after a fresh build/hot-rodding of the "big" 1275. Parked, went to work, worked, came out, turned the key to "run" so the fuel pump would run a bit. Apparently one cylinder was at TDC with enough mix left so the MSD could fire it. Little booger started without the starter.
Never worried about the ring seal after seeing that.

Everything in the family was bought way before prices went through the roof. The pickup has been in the family around 25 years, the camaro 11 years, the custom well this time 4 years, my grandpa owned for 8 years in the 80's. then sold it and then we bought it back

I wonder if this can work with current cars...

Yeah on any high performance or niche car. Take 73-82 corvette during the 2000s you couldn't give on away. Find nice ones topping out at 10k last auction I watched saw a 75 roadster (last year of convertibles) sell for 25k! So the key is to try and buy at the bottom of deprecation because it will go up and it won't be that bad when you dump a bunch of money in goodies on it.

This particular starter... I've heard it on a bunch of Volkswagen gruppe produkt. Usually on their high end vehicles like Veyron, Bentley Continental, Audi A8 W12 etc.

Wish I had a sound clip. Powermaster XS torque on a 427 BBC.
There is no stalling of the motor or "tap tap/chug chug" sound. Just a
"RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" and the engine fires with a boom. Nothing else like it.
Closest I could find, at 1:48.

My favorite is the French Inter microcar. It uses a gyrostart attached to a flywheel that has to wind up like in a helicopter. It's pretty awesome. This video has some digital noise on the soundtrack, but you can hear it:

Oh that is sweet! Quite an interesting way to start an engine.

We got a White truck that is powered this way at work. First time I heard it I was like "Someone is starting it with a air gun?? The starter is that messed up? Wait...he started it from inside, who was using the air gun on it and where?? What is this sorcery??". Then I learned about the system hahaha. The question I always had was, what happens if the air tanks are empty?
![]() 02/06/2014 at 12:13 |
|
I think I read that if need be you can use a special hose/hoses to use the air from your tires. Somehow that starter would have to turn the engine because the truck's useless with no air. No running engine=no air in tank=no starter=no engine running.

They thought of everything! Nice.

Although that should only be a worst case scenario. Unless there's a bad leak in the system or someone keeps constantly pumping the brakes with the engine off and the park brake not set, there should always be some air pressure in the system.

Say that to Volvo Trucks, they leak air from everywhere!
